Euthanasia is the practice of ending one’s life. Doing so may be caused by an incurable disease or extreme suffering. Euthanasia is performed on patients that no longer have a chance to live and who are suffering extreme pain. It is my opinion that euthanasia should be legal, but only when it ends the suffering of a person who does not have any chances of living. Prolonging the life of the individual will only prolong his suffering.
Euthanasia is legal only in the Netherlands, where doctors can put a patient to death if one gives consent and if one's disease is incurable. If the patient is unable to give his consent, legal guardian can give it for him/her.
People who don’t have any chances of living should not be made to suffer. While some may argue that life should never be taken, people who suffer from terminal stages of cancer – when the pain is unbearable – and other terrible diseases will surely disagree.
It is the right of a person to end his or her life when he or she chooses, especially when there is no other alternative than to continue to suffer. The quality of life can be so low for people suffering from debilitating diseases that they can rightfully ask medical professionals to end their life.
In many cases, medical personnel can perform euthanasia by not performing CPR or by not forcefully feeding the patient. Of course, the patient or his or her legal guardian must specifically request this and take full responsibility for the end result: death.
Many consider euthanasia to be similar to cold blooded murder. The reality is that medical personnel are trained – and also take an oath – to protect life under any circumstances. So, how can they end life?
Religion also strongly opposes euthanasia because it considers that only God has the right to give and take life. For religious leaders, euthanasia is taking a life without right.
Many people also believe that individuals who are not able to give their consent should not be euthanized. These individuals did not agree to being put to death, so ending their life is similar to murder.
In my opinion, a person should be allowed a dignified death. Any human being has the right to die with dignity and has the right to ask medical personnel to end his life when the only other course of action would be to prolong the suffering of the individual. While I do agree that medical personnel have taken an oath to protect life, prolonging the suffering of a person who has no chance to live is morally wrong as well. Euthanasia should be made legal, but very closely monitored and well regulated.
